Video Storage and Surveillance – A Review of Arlo Ultra 2
If you’re looking for the ultimate in-home security camera system, check out the new Arlo Ultra 2. This system not only gives you great resolution and high-quality sound, but it’s also one of the most affordable and feature-rich systems available. While some of those features don’t bring much value to your home security camera system, most of the package is a worthy competitor to its predecessors, the Arlo Pro 2 and the wildly popular Arlo 3. If you can afford it, however, the Arlo Ultra 2 is easily one of the most impressive home security cameras, period.
One of the biggest differences between the new Arlo 2 and the older Arlo Pro is its motion detection system. While the Pro’s system is better for static-location security, this motion-detection system is a welcome addition to a more “active” home security system. It can be used for an assortment of different events from protecting a babysitter from running into the room while the kids are not home to watching adults go into or out of a home or office. It can even be used when there is someone home and you suspect that they may not have the electricity to turn on an alarm, so you don’t have to worry about having to call the fire department to let them know there is a fire. If there is no power outage, then the motion detection will take care of turning the lights on or off. This feature alone makes it worth the price of the Arlo Pro 2 Camera and its built-in battery.

Another thing worth mentioning about the Arlo Ultra 2 compared to other security camera systems is its unique video capture ability. The company claims that the front and rear cameras on the Arlo can be used for “both” people and pets – which means you only need to have the camera connected to an HDTV to get a double viewing of your home or office area. However, we found that the most problematic aspect of this security camera’s ability to record was its 180-degree field of view (FOV). This means if you’re sitting in the living room watching the TV, you’ll get a different view of the room than if you were standing on the carpet just outside the door.
Despite its flaws, the Arlo Ultra 2 does have one redeeming quality: the fact that it has an extremely long battery life. While the camera did require a small amount of recharging after being on the wireless network for a month, it returned to being fully functional in less than an hour. In fact, it was able to stay on without a charge for an entire week. This comes as a relief for those who like to use their cameras at night. Most cameras require a recharge after approximately seven hours of use, so having the longest battery life on the market is extremely important.

In terms of picture quality, there isn’t much to complain about. For the most part, images are clear and decent. Some minor imperfections such as camera lens flares or the sun reflecting off a window might be seen during lower lighting conditions, but they are nothing that would affect our overall opinion of the camera. Overall, we liked the picture quality of the Arlo Ultra 2 and were impressed with how many features it had, including the battery life.
As far as video goes, this camera performed well for the most part. We didn’t detect any lens flare or motion artifact during our test videos, which is a relief since the majority of consumer reviews we’ve read have had more negative reviews. The one aspect of this security camera that we wish it had was a 4k resolution. Unfortunately, it does not come equipped with an HD display, so you will have to settle for an option on the off-brand Pro 4k security cameras that we tested. Still, it’s a nice feature to have and one that is worth paying extra for if it means you don’t miss a beat when it comes to getting real-time footage of your home, business, or other location.
One of the better features of this camera is the fact that it doesn’t use traditional flash for video. Many other models use a small “moist” LED light, which can flicker if the room is humid or has a lot of dust floating around. This isn’t a major problem, however, because the motion detection technology takes care of it automatically by using infrared. The result is a video that looks as clear as the day it was taken, without the camera taking the “blur” factor from ambient light. The audio is excellent on the Arlo Ultra 2 as well, with clear voice-over explaining the features as well as a menu that lets you switch between video, sound, or both.
Overall, this video storage and surveillance camera really perform as it should. You get an excellent value with very good sound quality, and you even get the nice option of sending the video to your email or social media account when you’re done recording. It’s a great product that gives you exactly what you need at a price you can actually afford. There’s no reason not to own it!
